Our Winner
The Mid-South Transplant Foundation, Inc. was chosen as our lucky Memphis Miracle Search winner. Not only did they correctly discover and submit the mystery code phrase, but they submitted this short essay on why their business is a Memphis Miracle:
Mid-South Transplant Foundation, Inc.
The ultimate miracle is the miracle of giving life. In the late 1960’s a little more than a “handful” of medical centers in the USA were exploring the miracle of life that could result from the donation and transplantation of human organs. Due to the vision and quest for innovative medical knowledge of a local surgeon, Dr. Louis G. Britt, Memphis was one of the trailblazers in the transplant community.
On April 9, 1970, an unfortunate pedestrian accident resulted in the death of a 24-year-old visitor from Greenville, NC, by the name of James Payne. Mr. Payne’s family agreed to be a part of medical history in Memphis, by donating his kidney for human transplantation. Mr. Leroy Hobson, who had been suffering from chronic kidney failure, was the benefactor of this lifesaving gift. This combination of events marked the birth of a new medical industry in Memphis.
Dr. Britt’s pioneering efforts gave rise to the Mid-South Transplant Foundation (MSTF). Despite the lack of funding, this organization forged ahead and became incorporated in 1976, and a certified Tissue Recovery agency in 2009. What originally began with three volunteer personnel is now a very vital and respected part of this city’s medical industry. MSTF is now this region’s federally designated organ and tissue recovery organization – serving the hospital staff and patients’ families of some 56 hospitals throughout the Mid-South region. Through the recovery and allocation of organs and tissues MSTF is the driving force that fuels Memphis’ lifesaving transplant centers, as well as provides life enhancing support to other hospitals through tissue recovery. Our humble beginning has not only helped build an entire medical industry, but has resulted in the most precious miracle of them all – the restoration of life to thousands. What a phenomenal journey!
