From the Top: Your Membership ROI

Three times a year the Greater Memphis Chamber hosts a Chamber 101 session where we open up our offices and invite new members to learn about all the ways we help grow our economy, improve our community and develop our members. Three times a year, members walk away amazed at the scope of work the Chamber pursues on their behalf. Here is a sample of the feedback we’ve received:

“The offices were very nice, and it was nice to see all the other areas the Chamber has that I wasn’t familiar with. I think a lot more goes on behind the scenes of the Chamber than most people think.”

“I didn’t realize just how much the Chamber did for its members and the city.”

While I encourage you all to attend the next Chamber 101 session on June 18, I realize that our offices cannot feasibly hold the thousands of representatives from our member companies. So for the next couple of weeks, I’ll lead you on a virtual Chamber 101, stopping at our different departments and breaking down how your investment benefits your company as well as the entire city.

You could be like Cooper Freight, who learned that membership didn’t just get them a discount on networking events, but the Chamber had the resources and relationships in place to expedite the process for closing a road to secure their property.

Or your manufacturing company could be looking for qualified workers with a special skill set. Our workforce development team can connect you with the Greater Memphis Alliance for a Competitive Workforce, who will work to make sure you get the employees you need.

And that’s just a sample of how the Chamber assists its members. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll learn:

  • First, we’ll stop by the Economic Development department and talk about what our staff is doing to recruit companies and jobs to our community. While we’re there, we’ll learn about our Research team and how they work both to provide potential companies with data on Memphis and you with market and demographic information.
  • Then, we’ll take a trip down the hall to Community Development where our staff are busy developing a qualified workforce. This department also runs our industry councils, including Manufacturing, Regional Logistics and International Business.
  • Community Development also houses our third pillar of focus: Public Policy, and you will see how our team advocates for policies that benefit your company. Our JOBS PAC also plays a crucial role in selecting candidates to support that align with the Chamber’s legislative agenda.
  • Finally, we’ll stop at Membership Development and hear about all the ways our communications and membership teams work to promote your business, help you make connections and provide you resources to save you money and develop your skills.
Simply put, your investment allows us to achieve our goals and objectives, which in turn makes Memphis a better place for you to do business and all to have the opportunity for economic prosperity.

If you have any questions about the value of your membership, please leave them in the comments section below, and I’ll try to answer them in upcoming posts. I also encourage you to attend our next Chamber 101 on June 18, 2015 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. - admission is free and you can register by clicking here. As always, I look forward to working with you to make Memphis the world class city we know it can be.
