A Message from a Member: Be #ProudofMemphis

I just wanted to post about our Greater Memphis Chamber. I don't know how many people in the community know about our Chamber. Amy Daniels is a great leader for the organization. Last month at their New Member Mingle, I attended with my wife Kay Johnson. I had the privilege of hearing one of our doctors at Eyewear Gallery, Dr. Do Nguyen, speak on bringing more youth into the fold of the Chamber. I didn't realize how vital the Chamber was to our community. It helps build a strong infrastructure for our city, through its members and its board. The people in the Chamber's membership are great, but everyone in the city should know how important their voices are through an apolitical medium. The Chamber no longer receives funding from the City so it is completely self-sustaining and has been instrumental in our keeping St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, bringing Electrolux to Memphis and keeping ServiceMaster in our hometown, all providing jobs for our citizens.
We constantly hear the negatives about our city and unfortunately that comes through our media. While it is very important that we be informed of danger, I think it SO important that the media cover the great people, organizations and companies of the city. The media could post something daily about our world-renowned St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the great work they do for children who come here from all over the world. This would provide a positive spin on Memphis. We have been voted one of the best and most economical places to live, one of the friendliest cities, a great healthcare hub with many professional schools and a major logistics capital in the world.
Don’t we all agree that it’s the positive things that the city provides to help us retain our young Memphians? They are the lifeblood of our future. We shouldn't take this for granted and be proud of all the nice and great people that improve our lives and the infrastructure of the city. I think the hashtag #ProudofMemphis should become part of our mantra. Let’s join together through our collective social media posts, and maybe the media will pick up on that and follow suit. We Memphians may have to take charge of this positive spin about the city. Please help the city by contributing and/or volunteering in some of the community projects spearheaded by the Chamber. We need as many people as possible to join and not just people who own companies.

Thank you to the Greater Memphis Chamber, its board and Amy Daniels. A special thanks goes out to those who spoke at the New Member Mingle, who in their own microcosms are fighting and rallying troops to #MakeMemphisBetter. Hank Martin of NSAIG, Dr. Do Nguyen of Eyewear Gallery and Lameka Ivy of Ivy Mediation and Consulting put their own spin on what they have received from the Chamber and how we can help. They inspired me to write this.

Thank you to all of you and thank you, Memphis!
