Four Strategies to Improve Local SEO

Local businesses rely heavily on search engine optimization to build their online presence, and with the stiff competition and constant changes in SEO, it’s important to optimize your strategy to stay ahead of the game. Below are four strategies to help improve local SEO for your business:

1. Verify local listings: To get started, make sure you’ve claimed your Google My Business listing. To see if your business is verified, click here.

Once you’ve verified your listing on Google My Business, check other websites such as Yelp, and Yahoo! to ensure your business is verified there as well. Search engines scan these sites, and if your business is not verified, it will negatively impact where you appear in search results. To enhance these listings, add relevant information such as business hours, services, and photos.

Finally, if you have more than one location, be sure to have separate listings.

2. Website content: Title tags, meta descriptions, and your website copy still matter.

a. Title tags and meta descriptions: These appear in search results, so it’s important to incorporate keywords and share relevant information in your tags and descriptions. In our culture of instant gratification, people want to find information as quickly and easily as possible. Be sure to get to the point and incorporate your focus keyword(s).

b. Copy: Make sure the copy used on pages throughout your website provides users with the information they need, while incorporating your keywords and business’ name, address(es), and phone number(s) (NAP) on every page. We recommend putting your NAP information in the footer of your website.

3. Online reviews: These matter. Not only do reviews enhance SEO by creating user-generated content and boosting long-tail keyword traffic, but also people trust them. According to a 2016 study, 68 percent of people are more likely to use a local business after seeing positive customer reviews. Plus, they’re easy to get. The same 2016 study says that all you have to do is ask and 70 percent of consumers will leave a review.

Be sure to monitor and respond to reviews on outlets such as your business’ Facebook page, Google My Business, Yelp, and Trip Advisor.

4. Link building: Google looks at where your website is linked from to help determine where you rank on search engine results. So, it’s important to find ways to build links from other websites. A couple of ways to do this is to partner with local bloggers and sponsor various local events.
