Protecting People and Property: A Business Owner's Responsibility

People and property are arguably a business owner’s most valuable assets, and there are a variety of things that can happen in the workplace to put them at risk. Some of those are nearly impossible to prepare for, but there are certain precautions that can be taken to optimize the safety and security of your business.
Fire Protection
Fires are one of the most common safety risks in commercial buildings, and yet, they can also be one of the easiest to prevent. Statistically speaking, many fires start from faulty wiring. Therefore, monitoring your building’s cabling and wiring systems on a regular basis is important. Reporting electrical hazards can go a long way toward preventing fires in your space. Maintaining tight building security is another great way to prevent fires, especially those that may be caused by arson. And, practicing good housekeeping can help slow the spread of flames in the event of a fire, as clutter can fuel fires and prevent access to emergency exits.
Video Surveillance and Alarm Systems

Keeping your property safe from theft and vandalism is just as important as keeping it safe from fire. Cameras and alarm systems are good places to start. There are various types of surveillance and alarm options available to maximize the benefit of today’s security technology, including night-vision, motion-activated and sound-enabled cameras that allow for real-time recording.
Communication Solutions

An effective, integrated communication system can be a great tool for proactively protecting your workspace. Such a system may include a sound and paging system for communicating general information or emergency notices as quickly as possible. Additionally, a documented plan regarding guests and visitors is a great way to ensure that uninvited or unapproved guests aren’t given access to your building.
IT Security
In today’s technology-driven culture, information and digital security is just as important as physical security, and in many cases, it can be much easier to steal or tamper with a business’ files and information online than to access the physical property. Ways to combat these threats include ensuring that passwords are strong (and changed often), having an IT security system in place and following protocols regarding any suspected information theft or any kind of malicious website or software encounter. Furthermore, it is important to maintain strong wireless networks so that you are able to quickly identify if or when digital information has been tampered with.
The risks of safety and security threats are different for every business. However, the security measures enacted in any business should be evaluated periodically to ensure they are as optimized as possible for the safety and security of the people and property at the heart of the business.
