Chamber Receives Award of Excellence for Diversity

The Memphis Regional Chamber was recognized by Diversity Memphis with a 2008 Award of Excellence at a ceremony held on Thursday, August 28. Given annually, Diversity Memphis recognizes businesses that are utilizing and promoting diversity and in doing so, strives to make a better community.

The Chamber was recognized as the leading economic development organization for the City, County and Mid-South Region that continues to cultivate a business culture of inclusiveness and diversity. “We are honored by this award,” said John Moore, President & CEO for the Chamber. “It is important as an organization that represents the entire business community that we set the bar high to build a culture of inclusiveness into our city’s DNA.”    

Other 2008 recipients for the Award of Excellence include First Tennessee; Baptist Memorial Women’s Hospital; Self Tucker Architects, Inc. and Southaven Pontiac, Buick, GMC. This is the second year to present the Award of Excellence to recognize a company, business or institution for their work in promoting Diversity as an asset.  "It is important that we recognize businesses that promote diversity and embrace the entire community,” said Mary McDonald, Diversity Memphis Board Chair. “By awarding these businesses we hope to encourage others to see the positive benefits of ensuring a diverse workplace.”

The Memphis Regional Chamber is the lead economic development agency for Memphis/Shelby County, and is a private, non-profit, membership-driven organization comprised of 2,300 business enterprises, civic organizations, educational institutions and individuals.

In 2007, the Memphis Regional Chamber was named one of the Top 20 Economic Development Agencies in the Country by Site Selection Magazine.
