The Greater Memphis Chamber, along with its International Business Council, has named Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President and CEO, FedEx Corporation, with the first Global Leadership Award. The award will be presented during the Global Leadership Series Dinner with special guest Dr. Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday, September 15. Smith will be in attendance to receive the award.

The Global Leadership Award is intended to recognize the achievements of business leaders who, through personal and professional accomplishments, have enhanced Memphis’ position in global trade. Selection criteria included: determination of the individual’s impact on the community, professional activism, business acumen and integrity. It was determined through Smith’s international business achievements and related contributions to the economic development of Memphis that he has served to elevate the global recognition and international business profile of Memphis to a new level.

“With the recent opening of the FedEx hub in Guangzhou, China, and his commitment to promoting Memphis as ‘America’s Aerotropolis,’ Mr. Smith was the perfect choice to inaugurate this award,” said John Moore, President and CEO, Greater Memphis Chamber. “His innovative company symbolizes Memphis’s connection to the global economy.”

Charles Blatteis, Chairman of the Chamber’s International Business Council, said: “The International Business Council is honored that Mr. Smith has agreed to accept this award.  We recognize how crucial it is for Memphis to maximize its logistical advantages on an international scale, and the Chamber brings us together to further that goal. Fred Smith took his vision and transformed it into a thriving, innovative company. Ingenuity is a Memphis hallmark, and few people embody it more in the modern era than Fred Smith.”

The Global Leadership Series Dinner with Dr. Rice will be held at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. A cocktail reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner and presentation to immediately follow. Seating is limited. For more information regarding the event, please visit
