2014 Young Memphian: Sophia Cole, Medtronic

When Sophia Cole came to Memphis as a 19-year-old refugee from the Soviet Union Republic of Azerbaijan, she had $200 to her name and two small bags of personal belongings. For several years, she struggled with the English language, worked her way through school and experienced firsthand the kindness of strangers.

tnAchieves: Become a Mentor. Make a Difference.

Last week the Chamber hosted Governor Bill Haslam at our office, and he asked us to help him with a very important program called tnAchieves. Earlier this year Governor Haslam announced his vision for every Tennessee high school graduate to have the opportunity to obtain a postsecondary certificate or associate's degree free of tuition and mandatory fees. This vision became a reality when the Legislature passed the Tennessee Promise Scholarship Act in April of this year. Now, thousands of students in Memphis will have the opportunity to further their education and gain access to better jobs and salaries.
