2014 Young Memphian: Meghan Medford, Medford Roofing

The following is a profile from our summer issue of Memphis Crossroads Magazine: 2014 Young Memphis. Click here to view the entire magazine with profiles from our other nine Young Memphians.

Meghan Medford never expected to be in the roofing business, let alone founder and president of her own roofing company.

“I always knew I wanted to start my own business; I just didn’t know what that business would be,” she said. “But my fiancé William – now my husband – was working for another roofer in town, and I saw that the market had a need for better customer service and a new infusion of competition. I thought we could really do something different.”

Licensed in Tennessee and Arkansas, Medford’s company, Medford Roofing, began doing business in January 2011, specializing in energy-efficient commercial and industrial roofing projects.

During the past three years, the company has made more than $3 million in sales, with approximately 75 percent of the business from repeat or referral customers — a testament to the high standards of customer service to which Medford holds her company.

Recently, Medford Roofing was awarded the roofing job for International Paper’s planned $90.2 million, 235,000-square-foot Tower IV in East Memphis. Additionally, she plans on doubling her current staff of 10 by the end of the year.

“That’s one of the rewarding things,” Medford said. “It feels good to create jobs in Memphis so other people can provide for their families.”

She says perseverance has played a key role in her success.

“I’m very persistent. I really don’t give up; I just keep plugging away,” she said. “I’ve also met many great people in Memphis over the years that have helped me out in different areas and aspects of the business. I’m always learning, and I try to take away something from everyone I meet along the way. There are also so many resources in Memphis for small businesses.”

Her company’s latest great idea is getting a head start on the green roof scene. Medford Roofing recently received its LiveRoof certification and, although the concept hasn’t kicked off as extensively in Memphis yet as it has elsewhere, when it does, Medford said her company is ready to jump in.
