Annual Chairman's Luncheon 2013: #GreatIdeas

Combine an inherent soulfulness with a can-do attitude and it should come as no surprise that Memphis creates a perfect environment for great ideas. But those great ideas need great leaders and with the business community coming together to bring real direction for our city, our limits are among the stars.

We all can think of plenty of #GreatIdeas that originated in Memphis.

We’ve compiled our own little list:

1. Blues & Rock n’ Roll – Thanks to greats like Elvis, BB King, Sun Studios and Stax Records, Memphis will forever be the birthplace of Blues and Rock n’ Roll.
2. Greyhound & Continental Trailways – These bus lines ran across North America from humble beginnings in the one and only Memphis.
3. BBQ – Of course, BBQ wasn’t invented in Memphis, but we can all agree that ours is one of a kind.
4. FedEx – What Memphis #GreatIdeas list would be complete without FedEx, who has revolutionized shipping and logistics for the whole world?
  2. 5. AutoZone – This Memphis-based company is the largest retailer of aftermarket automotive parts and accessories in the United States.
6. Schering Plough – This is a company you can thank for brands such as Coppertone, Afrin & Dr. Schoals.
7. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – The hospital has treated children from all 50 states and around the world and has been named the top children’s cancer care in the United States.
8. Peabody Ducks – The idea for these famous birds originated when the General Manager at the time, Frank Schutt, left his duck decoys in the hotel fountain.
9. The VeinViewer – The vein finder and illuminator was recognized by Time magazine as one of the most innovative products in 2004.
10. Holiday Inn – Chingy could never have been chillin’ at the Holiday Inn if it weren’t for Memphis native Kemmons Wilson and his #GreatIdea.
But these are only 10 of many. For the next month, we need your help in sharing what you think are Memphis' #GreatIdeas including what you're most excited about coming up in the future. It could be about a new restaurant, a new initiative, whatever you're most interested in. Just don't forget to use #GreatIdeas and look for our live tweets about future #GreatIdeas during our Annual Chairman's Luncheon on Dec. 10th!
