Member Spotlight: Playhouse on the Square

  1. Member Playhouse on the Square plays a vital role in the Memphis art scene, working every day toward its vision of "enriching lives through theatre." Located in the heart of Overton Square, the trio of theatres provides one of the most diverse repertoires of theatrical work to speak to the intelligence, the soul and the imagination of the Memphis community. Today, Noby Edwards, Director of Public Relations, shares a little about Playhouse on the Square and what it brings to the Memphis art scene.
  2. Tell us about Playhouse on the Square.
  3. One of the best ways to describe Playhouse on the Square, is that it's Memphis' theatre. Every season we do an average of 17 shows, that way we can ensure that there is something on our season that will appeal to every Memphian. We're a company that is Memphis grown, we're proud of where we come from and we're proud of what we bring to Memphis.
  5. What does Playhouse on the Square uniquely bring to the Memphis art scene?
  6. One of the most unique things that Playhouse brings to Memphis is a sense of inclusivity. We strive to make our spaces and our shows accessible to every member of our community. In addition to our 17 shows per season, we have 13 educational and outreach programs that include things like a pay-what-you-can night for every performance, as well as an After School Acting Program geared toward keeping young people active and engaged during those critical after school hours.
  2. What kinds of shows and performances can we expect to see at Playhouse on the Square (and its other venues)?
  3. We perform every kind of show imaginable! We do 17 shows a season so that we can do shows that will appeal to every audience member. For example this year we did family friendly shows like Peter Pan and Junie B. Jones, edgy shows like American Idiot, and blockbuster musicals like Memphis, Billy Elliot the Musical, and Sister Act.
  5. What are the best ways Chamber members can support Playhouse on the Square?
  6. There are so many ways that Chamber Members can support Playhouse! The easiest, and most obvious, is to see a show! Join us for night at the theatre and then tell all of your friends, co-workers, EVERYONE about it! Another way to support Playhouse is to share information about our Educational Programs. We consider those to be our hidden gems. They start as early as 5 years old and we have classes all the way to the adult level. They are ideal for anyone who has been bitten by the theatre bug or wants to learn a new skill!
  2. What is your next show and where can we get tickets?
  3. We're currently showing Memphis the Musical, until May 29th. We have three shows left in our 2015-2016 season. Peter and the Starcatcher, Sister Act the Musical, and a new work written by a local playwright entitled MoonVine. Tickets can be purchased by calling 901-726-4656 or by visiting
