10 to Watch: Southern Airways Express

The following is a preview of the 10 to Watch issue of our Memphis Crossroads Magazine. View all of the 10 to Watch companies and the full magazine here.

At a time of flight reductions at Memphis International Airport, homegrown Southern Airways Express is focused on expansion.

“Memphis has always been an airline town,” said Stan Little, chairman and CEO of Southern Airways, “and we at Southern plan to do our part to keep it that way.”

The company vulcanized that pledge last year when it moved its hub operations from Olive Branch Airport to Memphis International.

So far, the company has replaced non-stop service to five cities dropped by the “previously-dominant carrier.” This year, watch for Southern Airways to add more non-stop service to even more cities.

“While the common perception is that a flight to anywhere requires a connection through Atlanta, our goal at Southern is to dispel that myth,” Little said. “We aim to truly become ‘Memphis' hometown carrier’.”

To do that, they’ll meet new customers on their turf: Expedia, Orbitz, and Kayak. So far, Southern’s website and call center have been the exclusive venues for ticket sales. The company was recently approved to list their flights on the major online search engines.

“This will be a ‘game changer’ for our company and for the traveling public,” Little said. “Plus, once the public at large learns of our free baggage, free parking, 20-minute check in times, and no security lines, we think they will seek out our flights anytime they fly.”
