Nucor Steel Proves "Hot" can be "Cool."

One of the great things about working at the Chamber is getting to know our members.  One of our members, Nucor Steel, invited some of the Chamber staff to take a tour of their Memphis facility to see how they make steel and to meet some of their very dedicated employees.

Nucor Steel is a world-class manufacturing company with high quality products,” says John Duncan, the Chamber’s vice president of member development.  “Their focus on safety and the priority they have for their workforce is impressive.  I’m proud to know that this type of organization is a vital part of our business community.”

The three-hour tour was enlightening and exciting.  Seeing scrap metal melted down and formed into steel is not only a hot experience, but a cool one as well.  Learning about the history of Nucor and the value they put on their employees, it’s no wonder some have worked for Nucor 30+ years.  See a bit of what we experienced in this short video taken on the tour:

FAST FACTS

  • Nucor Steel is the largest domestic steel mill with 200 facilities and 13 bar mills
  • The Memphis facility does 750,000 tons a year in Melt Shop capacity
  • Nucor Steel likes being located in Memphis for several reasons: Memphis is a strategic location with respect to access to raw materials; Access: it’s important to them that they have access to the river and the railroads as well as our interstate system
  • Their mission: to take care of their customers, be the safest, produce the highest quality at the lowest cost and be productive.
  • They have been working hard over the past 5+ years to get TS16949 certified (for autos)
