The Memphis Model: Memphis Peaceful as Police & Protesters Engage in Dialogue

On the evening of Sunday, July 10th thousands of men, women and children gathered in support of the #BLackLivesMatter Protest in Memphis, TN. While the protest began in the tourism district of Downtown Memphis, it quickly mobilized as participants began to march north towards the Hernando DeSoto Bridge where Interstate 40 connects Arkansas to Tennessee over the Mississippi River. Lasting for over four hours, the traffic on the bridge came to a standstill in both directions. Still, the protest remained peaceful, with police and protestors dialoguing and respecting the other's rights. The protest concluded with Interim Memphis Police Director, Mike Rallings, walking off the bridge arm-in-arm with leaders from the Black Lives Matter movement. They marched back to where the protest originated, where they prayed. The two sides agreed to meet on Monday, July 11th to continue the dialogue. It is important to note the evening ended with no injuries and no arrests.

Overall, so many came away from this event with a sense of pride for our city - for how our leadership, police officers and citizens worked together for peace. This is the Memphis Model.
