Accelerator Spotlight: Sky High

This summer, more than 50 startup founders and students are growing their companies in Memphis through a joint partnership of business accelerators. Each week until Memphis Demo Day on August 11, we’ll introduce you to these companies and the innovative products and technologies they’re launching right here in Memphis!

This week we’re highlighting Sky High, an accelerator dedicated to the unique needs of social impact tech startups, combining lean startup methodology with an intense social innovation curriculum. Memphis is ground zero for disruptive startups – focus areas include education, poverty, crime, health care and urban innovation – and Sky High participants are given access to the tools, mentors, and funding to build platforms for meaningful change in the city. There are two companies in this year’s Sky High cohort:

Org Connect – A program that essentially combines Salesforce and Dropbox into one suite, solving the painful problem that parent teacher associations have with maintaining record donors, documents, and best practices when there is turnover, i.e. when students (and their parents) graduate.

One Step Initiative – A social enterprise that partners with universities and community colleges to expose, empower, and instill skills in underserved high school kids via international exchange programs, technology, and service models that make them desired higher education students.

Sky High is operated by Start Co., a nationally recognized nonprofit 501(c)(3) venture development organization that builds founders and companies while promoting entrepreneurship in Memphis to advance the city’s economic growth. Start Co. invests capital and business and technical assistance into startup companies.  Further, Start Co. balances a growing ecosystem of support resources that invest in the culture needed for startup success. In addition to Sky High, Start Co. operates two other accelerators, Seed Hatchery and Upstart (both featured earlier in the summer), and jointly operates the music-focused accelerator Start MMT in partnership with The Consortium MMT. Each accelerator will be featured in upcoming newsletters. So far, Start Co. has helped its startups secure more than $14.8 million in cash investment.

How can you help these businesses grow in Memphis this summer? Attend an event, be a mentor or advisor, provide resources, become a customer, make a connection, or invest in a company! Let them know at!
