Memphis is a great city to live in. Since 2001, Memphis’ Cost of Living Index has been consistently 10% below the national average. In recent rankings by Forbes magazine and, our city with soul is the 4th best city for “stretching a paycheck” and the 2nd “cheapest place to live” in the United States. Earned income can go a long way here. Where else can you find brand new 4-bedroom, 3 bath houses priced around $180,400?

The basis of these two rankings is the quarterly Cost of Living Index (COLI) released by the Council for Community and Economic Research. COLI’s data is based on grocery store, housing, utility, healthcare and other miscellaneous prices simultaneously gathered by volunteer organizations around the country. The pricing period lasts 3 days during first three quarters of each year.  The Greater Memphis Chamber’s Research Department has been pricing for the index since 1990 and has never missed a quarter.   The index is a vital economic tool used by site selectors, economic development organizations, companies and individuals to compare living costs across multiple communities.

To see how Memphis stacks up to another community, check out the Chamber’s Cost of Living Calculator, and download some of the other informative data the Research team collects on a regular basis in our Data Center.
