The Necessity of Networking

Meet Young Memphian: Aquinas Early, Archer>Malmo

Aquinas Early is one of 10 Young Memphians featured in our annual Young Memphis issue of Memphis Crossroads Magazine.  We’ve asked each Young Memphian to submit a guest blog about their experience as a young professional in Memphis.  Aquinas works as the Senior Account Executive for PR for Archer>Malmo.  Here’s what she had to say.

The Necessity of Networking

Being fairly new to the area, I see Memphis as a city of thriving opportunity for savvy-young professionals. Moving presented an opportunity for a fresh new start.  I had to rebuild my business contact repertoire and the art of networking became an essential asset in establishing a successful career in my new hometown.

No one in Memphis knew of my professional accomplishments, and it was vital for me to establish myself here. In order to do this, I needed to know more about the city. Who were the key players? Where was the real career opportunity? Where can I find other young professionals, like myself, striving for success?  What community issues needed to be addressed?

One key organization that I found instrumental in helping obtain answers to the questions above was the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals (MULYP.)  MULYP serves as the volunteer auxiliary of the Memphis Urban League (MUL) and the affiliate of the National Urban League (NUL). The organization is one of the city’s largest networks of young leaders, ages 21-40.  It’s a terrific platform for young professional to, not only network, but volunteer and give back to our wonderful city.  Since getting involved with MULYP, I have met a host of young professionals who are clearly at the top of their professional game and serve as great community activists.

Thanks Crystal! It’s important to have a great strategy behind any tactical approach, even as it relates to the art of networking. Check out these tips to networking effectively: http://www.business2community.com/strategy/7-tips-for-networking-effectively-0232539. Once I put more thought/strategy behind my networking tactics it opened doors to more relevant opportunities.

Great post. I too am new to the Memphis area and slowly making the networking moves. Cold calls are tough. Emails not that much easier. People will not respond if they do not know my name or my face. It is so important to get myself out there.
