Falling in Love

Meet Young Memphian: Marcela Pinilla, Memphis Music Foundation and Latin Musician
Marcela Pinilla is one of 10 Young Memphians featured in our upcoming annual Young Memphis issue of Memphis Crossroads Magazine.  We’ve asked each Young Memphian to submit a guest blog about their experience as a young professional in Memphis.  Here’s what Marcela had to say.

Falling in Love

Almost seven years ago I met the love of my life, a born-and-raised Memphian who stole my heart. We met in China, chased each other around Asia for a few years, and then were married in Singapore in 2007.  At the time, the idea of moving to the States seemed very distant.  As time wore on, though, my father’s health started to decline (he lives in Bogota) and I was ready to take my musical career to the next level.  In 2009, we decided to move to Memphis to be closer to family and to try to find a toe-hold in the U.S. music industry.

At the beginning I thought we were only going to be here for a short while, but a month became two and before I knew it I found myself invested in a number of projects; the city opened up its arms to us and we now feel quite at home.

Just in the few years that we’ve been here, we’ve had the opportunity to see amazing things happen throughout the Memphis community.  I haven’t been here long, but it is evident to me that there’s something very special happening in Memphis right now.

My musical journey has been special, too.   In 2010, I released an EP— 100% made in Memphis. I’ve also had the honor of performing with many of the fine musicians that call Memphis home, and have had the pleasure of performing at some of Memphis’ finest venues.  I have felt embraced by a community of like-minded people and have hopefully been able to pay that embrace forward through my work in the community.

Aside from serving on the Board of Directors for the Overton Park Conservancy and being very active in the Latin community, I work as the Spanish Program Consultant in the Music Resource Center at the Memphis Music Foundation.  The music industry can be overwhelming and the right word at the right time can change things completely.  We help connect musicians to opportunities for personal and professional growth, and help them as much as we can with whatever they need.

Memphis has been good to me and I hope that I can continue to contribute back to a community from which I have learned so much.
