The Greater Memphis Chamber Economic Development team is a group of highly experienced and qualified individuals who work tirelessly to seek out, entice, and facilitate new corporate and manufacturing establishments in the greater Memphis area. From data gathering to incentive applications, the Greater Memphis Chamber Economic Development team has the project management experience and the tools to help any business make the right choice - Memphis!


In June of 2012, the Greater Memphis Chamber hosted "A Conversation With..." the President and CEO of Electrolux, Dr. Jack Truong. Electrolux is building a manufacturing facility in Memphis, and Truong talked about why he chose Memphis and their plans here in the near future.


On February 20, 2011, Mitsubishi Electric announced they had chosen Memphis, Tennessee, over Baytown, Texas, for the location of their new headquarters for the company’s heavy electrical equipment production in North America. Secret proposals, under the code name "Project 21," were negotiated with both cities through the endeavors of national site selectors.

“From the beginning, we planned a world-class facility capable of meeting the challenging quality, reliability and cost expectations of our customers,” said Brian Heery, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric Power Products.  “We needed a large water-front site near a city that could support our recruiting and training goals. Memphis was chosen for its strengths in these areas and the support of its state and local leaders." Mr. Heery went on to thank city, county and state government officials for their support and involvement and "the sincere efforts" of the Greater Memphis Chamber and the Memphis business community for presenting "an overall package that meets our needs.”

Founded in 1886, Johnson & Johnson has been and continues to be a global leader in healthcare. With more than 250 operating companies employing 118,000 employees in 60 countries, they have made a committment to their customers, employees, communities and stockholders.

In 2012, working closely with the Greater Memphis Chamber's Economic Development team, they researched, evaluated and eventually chose Memphis as the home to their new Logistics Center.

This new facility - the MLC - will become a critical link in the Medical Devices & Diagnostic (MD&D) supply chain that includes 1,650,000 orders shipped annually and the on-hand storage of 3,900,000 units. A distribution center of this magnitude required that certain needs be met, including:

  • A facility strategically located six miles from the FedEx Hub at Memphis International Airport
  • Building capacity and storage type that met the needs of the company:
    • 770,000 total square feet / 100,000 refrigerated square feet
    • 80% floor space utilization
    • 269,000 adjacent space available for lease
    • 80,000 total locations / 12,500 refrigerated
    • 140 Dock Doors
  • A facility that allowed for normal hours of operation of 24/5
  • Strategic placement near other Memphis-area health care companies, including:
    • Smith & Nephew
    • Medtronic
    • GSK
    • Pfizer
    • Shering-Plough
    • Zimmer (Summer 2012)

Johnson & Johnson also required a location that displayed a commitment to community and the welfare of their empolyees. Johnson & Johnson staff are focused on improving the health and well-being of people all over the world with philanthropic initiatives supporting 650 programs in 50 countries.
