The Greater Memphis Chamber has launched a goal to see 300 new contracts for Minority & Women-Owned Enterprises (MWBE) and 300 new contracts for Locally, Owned Small Businesses (LOSB) by the end of 2017. This goal was created to directly address the low percentage of receipts MWBE businesses receive in Shelby County as well as to encourage local purchasing.
This goal is supported by other Chamber initiatives to help MWBE and LOSBs grow such as the Ascend Memphis Business Development Program which pairs intermediate and advanced MWBE/LOSB businesses with larger companies for a mutually beneficial partnership. Since last year, the Chamber has been working to make certification more easily attainable and less costly for businesses who would classify as an MWBE.
“The Chamber wants to ensure that it is easy and accessible for any business to succeed in Memphis. In 2017, the growth of local, small, minority & women-owned businesses became such a priority for our organization, that we made it part of our goals and objectives, which is what we measure our success by. It is vital to the Chamber that there be new opportunities for MWBEs and LOSBs so they have the same advantages as other businesses and this goal to grow the number of contracts will have a direct impact on their bottom line,” said Phil Trenary, President & CEO, Greater Memphis Chamber.
The Chamber is working this year to build a web portal where lists like these will be available in one location accessible by everyone in the community. Businesses will be able to find contract opportunities and post contract opportunities.
